Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Overtime Loss To Army, 12-11

February 09, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse

Connolly forced extra period with goal in final second in fourth quarter

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse sophomore attack Chris Connolly tied the game with one second to play, but Army West Point scored 26 seconds into overtime as the Minutemen fell to the Black Knights, 12-11 at Garber Field on Saturday.

Connolly finished the day with seven points on two goals and five assists while freshman attack Gabriel Procyk had a memorable college debut with four goals and an assist. Follow attackman Devin Spencer added a pair of goals.

Three midfielders totaled a goal apiece in redshirt junior Billy Philpott, senior Ben Spencer and sophomore Kevin Tobin. Senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo and junior midfielder Jeff Trainor dished out an assist each.

Paparo led the defense with five groundballs and three caused turnovers, while junior long-stick midfielder Dan O'Brien also forced three Army turnovers and collected as many loose balls. Redshirt senior long-stick midfielder Mike Elcock notched a trio of groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Senior faceoff specialist Tom Meyers secured possession after possession for the Minutemen and set career highs in faceoffs won, faceoffs taken and groundballs in the process. Meyers finished the day 21-of-25 with 13 groundballs. It included a 9-for-10 first quarter.

Brendan Nichtern led Army with seven points via four goals and three assists. Miles Silva added four goals while Matt Manown had four points on a goal and three assists. A.J. Baretto notched 17 saves, including 10 during the second half.

In a game with 23 total goals, neither team led by more than two throughout the 60-minute, 26-second duration of play. Tied at 11-all entering overtime, Army won the ensuing faceoff and Nichtern rolled from X to his right side and around the post before he slotted a shot into the upper-right corner for the win.

Connolly forced the extra frame with his last-second heroics at the crease. After Army's Anthony George took a holding penalty with 16 seconds to play, Massachusetts put the ball in Procyk's stick with time winding down. Procyk pushed toward the right post before he fired a cross-cage pass to Connolly, who flicked his quick-stick shot into the back of the cage with one second to play.

Army forced Massachusetts into a comeback try after the Black Knights entered the fourth quarter trailing, 9-7, as they scored four consecutive goals for an 11-9 advantage midway through the frame. Silva tallied three times in the span while Nichtern added one. Devin Spencer ended the Black Knights' run on a feed from Connolly at the 3:15 mark.

Massachusetts built an early lead with goals by Tobin, Connolly and Devin Spencer in-order for a 3-1 lead with 8:50 to go in the first; however, Army rallied back with a three-goal series of its own that put the Black Knights up by one again, 4-3, with 3:39 to go in the frame.

The Maroon and White scored their goals in pairs the remainder of the way.

Procyk potted back-to-back tries late in the first, which pushed the Minutemen back in front, 5-4, entering the second frame. Philpott precluded Procyk's third goal of the day in a tally of his own during the second as Massachusetts stretched ahead, 7-5 with 6:05 remaining.

After two from Army bookending halftime, it was Procyk again before Ben Spencer scored with 15 seconds to go in the third to create the 9-7 lead.

Massachusetts returns to Garber Field with a Sat., Feb. 16 meeting with Ohio State. First faceoff will be at 1:02 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by Lax Sports Network.
