Minutewomen nearly wipe out 18-point third quarter defecit
PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts women's basketball nearly wiped out an 18-point third quarter deficit, but the rally effort was short by the narrowest of margins, as the Minutewomen fell to Saint Joseph's, 55-54, on Wednesday night at Hagan Arena. The setback drops the Minutewomen to 13-12 this season, 5-6 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Joe's is now 9-15 and 5-6 against conference foes.
Freshman Destiney Philoxy was one point shy of tying a career-high with 15 on the night and also added six rebounds, both team-bests. Senior Jessica George shot 4-of-8 for 11 points and junior Hailey Leidel had 10 points to go with six boards. Unfortunately for the Minutewomen, it was a tough first quarter from the field as the squad was held to just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) in the first 10 minutes, being outscored 13-6 in that time.
UMass strung together a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter and get within single digits of the Hawks, seeing George and Philoxy spearhead the try at a comeback. Freshman Jessica Nelson put down a layup with 5:25 on the clock, then on the next possession converted an and-one situation to bring the deficit down to 49-44.
Two quick fouls by Saint Joseph's then sent Hailey Leidel to the free throw line, where the junior confidently made both shots and moved the score to 49-46 with 1:58 left. An and-one by George combined with a Bre Hampton-Bey layup kept the difference at one point headed into the final minute. Leidel countered a Katie Jekot three with one of her own, but Leidel's came just as time expired in regulation.
Alyssa Monaghan led all scorers with 20 points for the Hawks over the entire 40 minutes. Katie Mayock came down with a game-high eight rebounds, but foul trouble limited Mayock as the game wore on.
The Minutewomen now turn their attention to a Sat., Feb. 16 Senior Day tilt against Davidson. Opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
