Big First Half Keys Davidson Over Women’s Hoops, 64-49

February 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Minutewomen host George Washington at the Mullins Center on Wednesday night

AMHERST, Mass. – In spite of a strong third quarter performance, University of Massachusetts women's basketball was unable to overcome a pair of early Davidson runs as the Minutewomen fell, 64-49, on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The loss moves UMass to 13-13 on the season and 5-7 in the Atlantic 10; Davidson improves to 15-10 and 9-3 in the A-10.

In conjunction with Senior Day, prior to the game the Minutewomen held a ceremony recognizing the program's three-member Class of 2019, which includes Jessica George, Genesis Rivera and Mackenzie Sullivan. In addition, head student managers Yvonne Chen (Queens, New York) and Annie Zampitella (Ipswich, Massachusetts) were thanked for their years of service to the Minutewomen.

George along with freshman Destiney Philoxy contributed 11 points each for the home squad and George added six rebounds in the setback. Junior Hailey Leidel handed out seven assists, four steals and two blocks.

It was a difficult shooting first half for the Minutewomen, who were held to 6-of-26 (23 percent) in the opening 20 minutes at the same time that Davidson constructed a pair of key runs. Off the opening tip, the Wildcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the sides exchanged points to finish the first quarter quarter. In the second stanza, it was an 11-0 run by the visitors that ultimately sent the teams into halftime with the score at 38-14 in favor of Davidson.

It appeared UMass was destined for a comeback after a quick 15-3 spurt by the Minutewomen, spearheaded by George and junior Vashnie Perry. The squad refused to go down quietly and battled down to the final buzzer, but could not get any closer than nine points as the game hit the home stretch.

Katie Turner (17 points) and Kianna Speight (16 points) paced the Wildcats on the offensive end, while Sarah Donovan added with a double-double (10 points, 15 rebounds).

The Maroon and White had the edge in points off turnovers (23-11) as well as in the paint (22-16), however it was Davidson that came away on top in the rebounding column, 43-28.

Massachusetts returns to the court on Wed., Feb. 20 for a 7 p.m. home game against George Washington at the Mullins Center.
