Men’s Track & Field Takes Third At Alden Invitational

O’Brien’s PR in weight throw was among the top performances of the day for the Minutemen.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field opened its 2019-20 indoor campaign on Saturday with a third-place team finish at the Alden Invitational. The Minutemen posted a team score of 91 points, while host Brown won the meet (115), followed by UMass Lowell (108). UMass finished ahead of Providence (81), Assumption (57.5), Bryant (45.5) and Rhode Island (20) in the scoring.
 
Jordan Howard collected third in both the 60 meter (7.03) and 300 meter (35.99) races, while Lucas Honohan was second in the 300m (35.73) and Colin Stoddard took fourth (36.16).
 
Noah Kortkamp was the runner-up in 60 meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.34 seconds and Javier Donegan made his collegiate debut with a fifth-place showing in the 500m (1:09.81).
 
The Minutemen scored three in the 1,000 meter run with Tyler Griffin (2:35.79), Mitchell Witt (2:36.63) and Herlin Rijo (2:38.09) taking fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
Rounding out the individual scorers on the track, Connor Ross was sixth in the 3,000m run with a time of 9 minutes, 1.48 seconds.
 
Coston O'Brien posted a personal record in the weight throw with a toss of 55 feet, 5.5 inches to land fourth. Samuel Darkwa, Jr. scored in two events, placing third in triple jump (42'4") and seventh in long jump (29'5.25"). Also picking up points in long jump, Myles McDermott claimed third (22'3") and Tyler Glendon was sixth (20'2.5").
 
Three Minutemen scored in high jump as Allan Bellevue was fourth (6'1.5"), Matthew Tarantino (5'11.5") followed in fifth and Thomas O'Donoghue placed eighth (5'9.75").
 
UMass had two relay teams place in the top-five—Honohan, Peter Ryan, Kevin Shannon and Stoddard combined to run 3 minutes, 25.14 seconds for third and Ross, Tarantino, Donegan and Mojuba Shonekan clocked in at 3 minutes, 33.4 seconds for fifth.
 
The Minutemen will be idle until January 10 and 11 when the squad will travel to Harvard for the Beantown Multi and the Beantown Challenge.
