December 06, 2019 | Hockey
The $2M project, funded entirely though philanthropy, will include a complete redesign and new layout of the locker room space.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Athletics has announced plans for a $2 million hockey locker room renovation project, for which fundraising is currently under way. The locker room will be the next phase of facility upgrades for the Minutemen hockey program that won its first Hockey East Regular Season title and reached the NCAA Championship game for the first time in school history in 2019.
The project will include a complete redesign and new layout of the current locker room space featuring updated player lockers, dry lockers, team lounge and academic area, a nutrition station, equipment room and branding.
"It is with great excitement that we are announcing a $2 million renovation of our locker room and players' lounge areas," said head coach Greg Carvel. "Since arriving at UMass four years ago, we have built or renovated our weight room, training room and video room while also rebranding all of our hockey areas. The last piece to be addressed is our locker room and lounge area. The Mullins Center is one of the top arenas in college hockey to play in, combined with all of our renovation projects I believe we will have one of the elite facilities in the country. Our focus is to maintain the success on the ice we have experienced recently and this project will help us achieve this goal. I want to thank Ed Ward for his lead gift on this project as well as thanking former UMass hockey players Ben Gallacher and John Riley and his wife Margaret Coughlin for their significant donations. Thanks also goes to alumni who have already made major commitments, Paul and Lovisa Carney, John Kennedy, Jeff and Wendy Carson, as well as Steve and Lesley Walczak."
Over $700,000 has been raised to date for the project, jump-started by a $250,000 gift from Ed Ward '75, '77.
Hockey alumnus Ben Gallacher '16 has also made a six-figure commitment to support the locker room effort.
"I want to acknowledge and thank the individuals who have already invested in this important athletics project," said Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford. "This is an important final piece in the facility upgrades for our nationally prominent hockey program. We will work diligently in 2020 to reach our fundraising goals and realize our grand design to build one of the best college hockey facilities in the country."
Formal project drawings, along with a construction timeline, will be shared in early 2020.
The locker room will be the latest in a series of facilities enhancements for the Minutemen, complimenting the new weight room, renovated athletic training room and video room and branding updates that have all been completed within the past three years.
The project will be funded entirely through philanthropy. For those interested in supporting this locker room campaign, or to learn more, please contact David Biancamano, Senior Associate Athletic Director, at dbiancamano@umass.edu or 413-545-4290.
