Minutewomen Bow Out Of Atlantic 10 Championship In Semifinals

November 08, 2019 | Women's Soccer

UMass made a late push to cut the George Washington lead to a goal in a 2-1 Colonial win in the semifinals.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. Lauren Bonavita scored her 12th goal of the season in the 82nd-minute as the No. 3-seeded UMass women's soccer team's late push came up short to No. 2-seed George Washington in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinals on Friday evening at Hermann Stadium, 2-1. The Minutewomen finished the season with a 10-6-3 overall record as they picked up their best finish in the A-10 standings since the 2000 season.

UMass made a furious push down the stretch after following the Colonials' second goal of the contest as Bonavita's goal gave life to the Minutewoman attack. The forward got past the GW defense for a one-on-one opportunity with keeper Tamaki Machi after a pass from Rebeca Frisk, making a move to her right around the keeper before sliding the ball into the bottom right corner of goal.

The Minutewomen got two more chances out of Bonavita late, including one in the 86th-minute as Machi came off her line outside of the box as UMass could not get off a shot on the attack. Bonavita nearly got the equalizer moments later in the 89th-minute as she forced Machi into a jumping save on a shot from range.

The Colonial attack brought pressure throughout the opening 20 minutes of play as they fired five shots with two on target. UMass keeper Peyton Ryan picked up her second save in the opening moments in the 20th-minute, dropping down to her right to stop George Washington's final shot on goal of the first half. Ryan finished with four saves on as GW attempted 17 shots to UMass' 10.

George Washington took advantage of their next shot on target in the second half as Sofia Pavon sent one into the top left corner of goal in the 47th-minute to put the Colonials ahead 1-0. Rachel Sorkenn put the Colonials up by two goals nearly 30 minutes later with a goal into the bottom right corner of the net.
