Offensive Outpouring Paces 83-49 Win at Vermont

November 29, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Leidel, Philoxy each drop 25 points as Massachusetts shoots 50% from the field

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Led by season-highs of 25 points apiece from senior Hailey Leidel and sophomore Destiney Philoxy, University of Massachusetts women's basketball picked up the fourth win in its last five games with an 83-49 triumph at Vermont's Patrick Gymnasium on Friday night. The Minutewomen never trailed en route to improving to 4-3 on the year, while the Catamounts drop to 2-5.

Freshman Maeve Donnelly pulled in a career-high 11 rebounds on the night and both Donnelly (4 blocks) and Philoxy (5 assists) were one short of tying respective career-highs.

Leidel had eight points in the first quarter to spearhead a 14-4 period-ending run. Freshman Angelique Ngalakulondi came off the bench to contribute three rebounds and Philoxy had two dimes as UMass held every Catamount scoreless besides Hanna Crymble (eight points).

Massachusetts took a 54.5% (18-of-33) shooting performance into the halftime break after Philoxy posted a 3-of-3 clip in the second stanza to go with two more assists. Leidel continued to roll from downtown, adding two more treys as the Minutewomen swelled the lead to as much as 19 before taking a 44-29 advantage into the locker room.
The Catamounts built momentum out of the break with a 10-2 run, cutting the margin down to seven before Massachusetts worked its way to the free throw line several times, highlighted by Philoxy's and-one with 1:47 on the clock.

As the game hit the home stretch Donnelly logged five rebounds, two steals and a block in the fourth quarter, sparking the squad to the first 12 points before Crymble ended the UVM drought with 4:00 left on the clock. From there the Minutewomen closed the book with the final 11 points of the night, capped by freshman Grace Heeps' first career trey and a layup from classmate Sydney Taylor.

Leidel (1,462) now sits just four points from tying former Minutewoman Pam Rosanio (2004-08) for No. 7 on the program's all-time career scoring list.

As a team, UMass' five turnovers were a season-low; the Minutewomen gave the ball away just once in the first half. On the flipside UVM had 17 turnovers on the night to which UMass scored 22 points.

Massachusetts has a six-day break before its next game, a Thurs., Dec. 5 matchup with New Hampshire at the Mullins Center.
