Minutewomen return to action Friday at Vermont
QUEENS, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball cut an early deficit down to single digits in the fourth quarter, but a hard-fought battle came up just short as the Minutewomen fell to St. John's, 82-71, on Monday night at Carnesecca Arena. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for Massachusetts, which is now 3-3, and the Red Storm improve to 4-1.
Junior Bre Hampton-Bey led the Minutewomen in the scoring column with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, with classmate Paige McCormick contributing 15 points, sophomore Destiney Philoxy pouring in 14 and freshman Angelique Ngalakulondi rounding out the double-figure efforts with 11 points.
Both McCormick and Ngalakulondi pulled down seven rebounds in the setback, and Philoxy handed out four assists in a return to her native Queens.
St. John's put together a quick 9-0 run all from beyond the arc early in the first quarter, forcing the Minutewomen to use a timeout just over three minutes into the contest. Massachusetts countered with a 10-5 stretch in the final 3:19 of the period, clawing back within eight points at 25-17.
Hampton-Bey's second quarter effort was instrumental in bringing the Minutewomen back within two possessions, contributing a three-pointer, rebound and assist in just over a minute. Philoxy capped the resulting 8-0 run with a layup at the 1:48 mark to wrap up nearly four minutes in which St. John's was kept off the board.
Out of halftime, Qadashah Hoppie swung momentum back to St. John's on the strength of a layup and two threes. The stanza was a difficult one from downtown for the Minutewomen as the squad was just 1-of-6 in the period from behind the arc while the Red Storm pushed the margin to 15.
A 16-point fourth quarter deficit was trimmed to eight with 2:10 left in regulation, when senior Hailey Leidel hit a left-wing trey, but soon after the Minutewomen were forced to foul and could not get any closer.
Massachusetts had the rebounding edge, 33-30, and held St. John's to just six offensive boards and two second chance points.
For the Red Storm, Hoppie logged a game-high 22 points and Tiana England was just short of a double-double with 15 points and eight dimes on the night.
The Minutewomen now focus on a Fri., Nov. 29 game at Vermont, with opening tip coming at 7 p.m. from Patrick Gymnasium.
