Stellar Behind the Arc Effort Powers Win Over Brown

Massachusetts ties program record with 17 three-pointers made in 95-42 victory
AMHERST, Mass. – A program-record-tying 17 made three-point field goals and a balanced effort with four double-digit scorers were the highlights for University of Massachusetts women's basketball as the Minutewomen defeated Brown, 95-42, on Thursday night at the Mullins Center. Massachusetts is 3-2 following its third straight win and the Bears drop to 2-3 on the year.

A dominant performance for the entire 40 minutes saw the Minutewomen shoot 30-of-63 (47.6%) from the field and 17-of-32 (53.1%) from beyond the arc, holding the opposition to just 23% on a 14-of-61 clip.

Senior Hailey Leidel tied a season-best putting down a game-high 20 points and junior Paige McCormick (18), sophomore Destiney Philoxy (15) and freshman Sydney Taylor (11; career-high) rounded out UMass' double-figure performances. Freshman Maeve Donnelly led the charge on the glass with a career-best eight rebounds, junior Bre Hampton-Bey's seven assists were a season-high and senior Vashnie Perry added three steals.

UMass did get off to a slower start than usual from the field but bounced back with a 9-0 run and did not trail after the 5:44 mark of the first quarter. McCormick had eight points and four rebounds in the stanza to spark the early momentum swing.

Leidel owned 16 points by halftime, 15 of which came from downtown on a 5-of-7 ledger. UMass closed the second quarter on a 6-1 run in final 1:30, holding Brown scoreless from the field, to take a 43-21 lead into the locker room.

Out of the break UMass showed no signs of slowing down, putting the game away with going a perfect 5-of-5 showing behind the line and flipping seven Brown turnovers into 13 points.

As the game hit the home stretch, freshman Grace Heeps and sophomore Madison Lowery contributed their first points as Minutewomen and junior Lauraine Joensen put down a layup for her first scoring of the season.

Defensively the Minutewomen successfully contained Brown's two leading scorers in Justine Gaziano and Dominique Leonidas, who entered the night averaging 20.3 and 10.8 points, respectively. It was Sydney Rosant who led the Bears with seven points, marking the first time since Jan. 11, 2012 that a Division I opponent of UMass went without a 10-point scorer.

The squad claimed a plus-15 rebounding margin (45-31), had a 29-6 edge in points off turnovers and received 31 points from the bench.

Massachusetts plays its final game ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday on Mon., Nov. 25, visiting BIG EAST foe St. John's for a 7 p.m. tilt at Carnesecca Arena.
