Men’s Soccer Closes Out Regular Season With Shutout Win Over Hawks

November 02, 2019 | Men's Soccer

Ryan Levay scored the lone goal in the 46th-minute to keep UMass’ A-10 Tournament hopes alive.

AMHERST, Mass. Freshman Ryan Levay netted the game-winning goal in the 46th-minute as the UMass men's soccer team kept their Atlantic 10 Tournament hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Rudd Field. The Minutemen will await their tournament fate tonight as the final league games are set to begin at 7 p.m.

The UMass attack was on the front foot early as the Minutemen nearly took a lead in the 6th-minute after earning their first of eight corner kicks on the game. Levay sent a corner into the box for Quinn Serafino, who found the post with a header before Evan Fournier nearly had a goal of his own as a SJU defender headed the would-be goal away at the line.

The Minutemen broke through in the 46th-minute on Levay's second goal of the year as Ryan Saul started things off with a driven shot off of the Hawks' keeper Joseph Boehm. Serafino followed the shot by getting his boot on it to deflect it over to Levay, who converted from in close into the left side of goal.

UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin came up with four saves on the afternoon, picking up one in the first half before turning away three over the final 45 minutes to preserve the fifth shutout of the year for the Minutemen. The junior picked up a key save in the 67th-minute, getting his hand on one to send it over the post off a header from the Hawks' Garrett Lyons.

The Hawks out-shot UMass 17-10 on the day but the Minutemen responded by putting six of their 10 shot attempts on target led by two on goal from Serafino while Levay and Chandler O'Dwyer each attempted a pair of shots for the Minutemen.

UMass currently sits with nine points in the league table heading into the final regular-season matchups tonight and will await to see if they qualify for their fifth consecutive A-10 Tournament for the first time in program history.
