Leidel puts down game-high 17 points; Minutewomen open game with 17-0 run
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball opened the game with a 17-0 run in the first 5:30 of play as the Minutewomen crusied to a 74-48 win over Hartford on Sunday at the Mullins Center. UMass evens its record at 2-2 following the victory, while the Hawks drop to 0-4 on the season.
Â
With a game-high 17 points, senior Hailey Leidel moved into eighth all-time on the UMass scoring list (1,408) after passing former Minutewomen Crystal Carroll (1,405; 1993-97) and Julie Ready (1,406; 1977-81). At No. 7 on the list is Pam Rosanio, who netted 1,466 points in a career spanning 2004-08.
Â
Sophomore Destiney Philoxy contributed 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win. Freshman Angelique Ngalakulondi was instrumental off the bench with a career-high 12 rebounds, as was junior Bre Hampton-Bey with as many points. Hampton-Bey added three steals and freshman Maeve Donnelly logged three blocks.
Â
A standout defensive effort by Massachusetts forced Hartford into an 0-for-9 line from the field to start the game, all the while the Minutewomen went 7-of-11 at the other end. Two of Ngalakulondi's six first quarter rebounds came during the 17-0 run to help spark the early jump. UMass also went the entire first quarter without committing a foul.
Â
That defensive momentum carried into the second stanza as the Hawks were held to just 1-of-12 shooting, with their only other seven points coming at the free throw line. Hartford did keep the Minutewomen scoreless in the final 3:39 before halftime, but the home side still carried a 44-17 advantage into the break.
Leidel made all three of her shots from the field in the third quarter and contributed two steals as well in the frame.
Hartford capped the game with an 11-0 run, but the 37-point lead built up by the Minutewomen earlier in the fourth solidified the Sunday afternoon triumph.
Â
Massachusetts forced 26 turnovers–the most by an opponent since Nov. 12, 2017–off which the Minutewomen scored 32 points. The Hawks were led by Jada Lucas (15 points) and Sierra Smith paced the squad on the glass, hauling in 10 rebounds.
Â
The Minutewomen cap a quick two-game homestand on Thu., Nov. 21, hosting Ivy League foe Brown in a 7 p.m. game.
