No. 2 Hockey Edged At UNH, 3-1
November 10, 2019 | Hockey
Junior Mitchell Chaffee scored his seventh of the season for the Minutemen in the setback.
DURHAM, N.H. – No. 2 University of Massachusetts hockey opened the scoring in the second period, but New Hampshire responded with two quick goals that proved to be the difference in a 3-1 setback for the Minutemen at the Whittemore Center on Sunday afternoon. The loss leaves UMass at 6-2-0 overall, 2-2-0 in Hockey East, while the Wildcats improve to 5-2-1 and 3-1-0 in league action.
Â
"I wasn't real happy with our start of the game, taking three penalties in the first period and three more in the second period," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "It's tough to get any kind of momentum going. I thought UNH came out and played great, good pace and the goaltender was outstanding late in the game. I thought our third period was much better, we were in desperation mode and UNH was just trying to hold on to their lead. We did a lot of good things in the third, but their goaltender played well and we couldn't find a way to score an ugly goal."
Â
After a scoreless first, UMass took a 1-0 lead 3:01 into the second. Junior Mitchell Chaffee redirected in a Zac Jones shot from the slot on the power play for his seventh of the season and junior John Leonard picked up an assist on the play as well.
Â
UNH responded with two quick goals, though, to pull in front, 2-1. Ryan Verrier's shot from the point fluttered over a screened Filip Lindberg at 8:16. Then just 13 seconds later, Max Gildon scored from the perimeter on the power play to put the Wildcats on top off a faceoff win in the UMass zone.
Â
The Minutemen poured on the offensive pressure in the third, out-shooting the Wildcats 13-3 in the frame. Chaffee came within inches of tying the score with 3:43 remaining in regulation, but his one-timer rung off the crossbar.
Â
New Hampshire's Anthony Wyse added an empty net goal at 19:32 from Liam Blackburn that completed the scoring.
Â
UNH finished with a narrow 29-28 shot advantage and went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 1-for-3. Lindberg had 26 saves for UMass and Mike Robinson made 27 stops for the Wildcats.
Â
The Minutemen will be back in action next Friday, November 15, when the squad travels to Boston University for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against the Terriers.
