Comeback Falls Short For No. 5 Hockey In 4-3 Loss At BU
November 15, 2019 | Hockey
The Minutemen scored three times in the third, but were unable to climb back from a 4-0 deficit.
BOSTON – No. 5 University of Massachusetts hockey scored three times in the opening nine minutes of the third period, but came up just short of erasing a 4-0 deficit, falling at Boston University, 4-3 on Friday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 6-3-0 overall, 2-3-0 in Hockey East, while the Terriers move to 3-3-4 overall and 2-2-3 in league action.
"I thought that was as dominating as we've been since I've been at UMass throughout the whole game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Every chance BU had, they made the most of it. I give my guys credit, they played hard, but again, we were playing well in the first period, we take a penalty and we're down 1-0. It's frustrating. I feel for our guys, they played great. I thought our guys played extremely well, the difference in the game was BU was better around the blue paint than we were and their goaltender was outstanding."
UMass out-shot BU by a three to one margin in the first period, but the Terriers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. With an extra attacker on for a delayed penalty, Matthew Quercia cleaned up a rebound in the slot to open the scoring at the 7:02 mark.
BU put in another loose puck in the back of the UMass net 3:31 into the second with Patrick Curry registering the tally from Patrick Harper and Cam Crotty.
It became a 3-0 advantage89 at the 5:26 mark of the second with Gabriel Chabot lift a puck over goaltender Matt Murray off a feed from Jake Witkowski, chasing Murray from the UMass net.
The Terriers added a fourth in the closing seconds of the stanza on the power play, courtesy of David Farrance.
UMass opened the third period by finally solving goaltender Sam Tucker 48 seconds into the frame. Freshman Gianfranco Cassaro crashed the net and buried a puck that junior John Leonard flung towards the goal from the half wall. Senior Jack Suter picked up an assist on the play, as well.
The Minutemen added another at the 4:08 mark with junior Mitchell Chaffee dishing off to Oliver Chau on an odd-man rush for his first tally of the season.
Freshman Zac Jones then brought UMass to within one at 4-3, sniping a feed from Bobby Trivigno through traffic from the left faceoff circle with 11:09 left in the third.
That would be all the Minutemen would manage, however, as Tucker finished the contest with 49 saves. UMass out-shot BU 52-22 on the night and won 34 of 62 (54.8%) faceoffs. Sophomore Filip Lindberg made 11 saves in relief of Murray (seven saves) and took the loss for the Minutemen. The Terriers were 1-for-3 on the power play, while UMass went 0-for-2.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow night, November 16, with the second game of the weekend series slated for 8 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
