Massachusetts Football Falls To FIU On The Road

Mangram sets career-high with 10 tackles, recovers fumble by Panthers

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football dropped a 44-0 game to Florida International University at FIU's Riccardo Miller Stadium on Saturday evening. The Panthers improved to 2-3 with the win while Massachusetts slipped to 1-5 on the season.
 
Redshirt senior Michael Curtis started at quarterback and finished 5-for-19 with 66 passing yards and two interceptions. Curtis also rushed for 15 yards on six carries. Redshirt senior Randall West rotated in at quarterback and went 2-of-5 for 11 yards.
 
Freshman Jermaine "OC" Johnson, Jr., hauled in three receptions for 33 yards. Redshirt sophomore Jessie Britt added two catches for 32 yards.
 
Redshirt senior Martin Mangram led the defense with 10 tackles, a career high. Mangram made nine of his stops unassisted and added a fumble recovery to his ledger. Redshirt sophomore Claudin Cherrelus and junior Cole McCubrey totaled nine takedowns each. Junior linebacker Chinedu Ogbonna notched 2.0 TFLs, including a nine-yard sack while senior James Bowe, Jr., had the forced fumble along with four stops.
 
James Morgan went 19-of-31 for 263 yards passing at the helm of the FIU offense, with touchdown receptions by Tony Gaither IV and Austin Maloney. Anthony Jones posted 115 yards on the ground via 20 carries, with one touchdown run.
 
FIU totaled 17 points in each of the first two quarters. It included a pair of Morgan passing touchdowns, one each to Gaiter and Maloney, Jones' rushing touchdown, a Maurice Alexander 90-yard punt return for a score and a pair of Borregales field goals.
 
Borregales completed scoring during the third quarter with his third field goal of the game following a Napolean Maxwell rushing TD.

The Minutemen conclude a two-game road swing with a trip to Louisiana Tech (4-1 overall) on Sat., Oct. 12. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Ticket information is available through 866-UMASS-TIX.
