AMHERST, Mass. -- The UMass men's basketball team gets one step closer to the official start of the 2019-20 campaign as Matt McCall's Minutemen host Western New England on Tuesday evening at the Mullins Center for an exhibition contest. Fans can get their first glimpse of the team before next Tuesday's season-opener against UMass Lowell, and admission to Tuesday's game is free of charge!

Atlantic 10 Media Day Coverage
Head coach Matt McCall participated in Atlantic 10 Media Day last Thursday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The third-year head coach met with the media to discuss the excitement surrounding the 2019-20 UMass squad, which includes five returners and nine newcomers.

"We're going to get better because we have great kids who want to work," McCall said. "How we look on November 5 is not how we'll look in January. We need to evolve as a basketball team right now."

"With this group, as close-knit as they are, hopefully that will help push us over the top and translate into wins."

Much of the hype around this year's Minuteman team surrounds freshman center Tre Mitchell, who comes into his rookie season in Amherst as the Connecticut Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year in 2019. A four-star recruit according for Rivals and ESPN, he was ranked 72nd nationally by Rivals, 17th positionally for centers, and 73rd by ESPN. Mitchell led Woodstock Academy to a 38-2 record in 2018-19, averaging 16.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.6 blocks per game. Coach McCall on this year's returners and newcomers, including Mitchell, Carl PierreDjery BaptisteKeon Clergeot and Samba Diallo:

New Look Staff
During the offseason, head coach Matt McCall announced two new assistant coach hires, the promotion of Lucious Jordan to assistant coach, and several staff reorganizations. Tony Bergeron and Tyson Wheeler have both been hired as the two new assistant coaches.

"We have been very fortunate to add people like Tony Bergeron and Tyson Wheeler to our staff," said McCall. "They have tremendous basketball backgrounds and have been successful at every point in their careers. Both bring a passion for UMass that will help build and develop a new culture for our program."

Additionally, McCall added former Dartmouth head coach Paul Cormier as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach/Chief of Staff which is a non-coaching position. Organizationally, Brian Grossman will take over Jordan's former role as Director of Basketball Operations, while Jacob Kurtz will move into the role of Director of Scouting/Video.
