UMass Runs Past WNE In Exhibition, 83-47

The Minutemen open the regular season next Tuesday vs. UMass Lowell at Mullins
Highlights
AMHERST, Mass. – Using a balanced scoring attack and 50 points in the paint, the Massachusetts men's basketball team used a big second half to fly by Western New England in an exhibition game on Tuesday at the Mullins Center, 83-47.
The Minutemen had three players in double-figures, led by freshman T.J. Weeks with 18 (5-of-10), helping UMass to a 43-12 advantage in bench points. Fellow rookie Tre Mitchell added 13 on 4-of-9 shooting, while Sy Chatman had 13 and nine boards. Djery Baptiste led all players with 10 boards off the bench and added seven points.
Leading by 11 at half, Massachusetts came out hard early in the second half, and used eight straight points from Samba Diallo to break the game up and up the Minuteman lead to 20, and steadily increased the margin to as many as 39. As a team, Massachusetts shot 54% (33-of-61), and held a 44-31 edge on the glass in the game.
The Golden Bears couldn't handle the UMass press as the half wore on, with the Minutemen holding WNE without a point for nearly five minutes two different times over the final 20 minutes. Overall, the Golden Bears shot 35% (16-of-46), led by nine points from Nick DeGennaro.
While WNE kept itself in the game through the first 10 minutes, the Minutemen used a 20-9 run over the final eight minutes of the first half on 7-of-11 shooting to open up a 11-point advantage at the break thanks to five points apiece from Mitchell, Chatman and Carl Pierre.
Mitchell led the way with 11 points at halftime, with Chatman adding nine points and dominating on the glass with six rebounds.
Massachusetts will open the regular season next Tuesday night when the Minutemen host UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on NESN and streamed on ESPN+ outside of New England.
Tickets for the 2019-20 UMass men's basketball season are now on sale for all 16 regular-season home games in the Mullins Center. Tickets can be purchased now online through the UMass Athletics Ticket Central page, by calling the ticket office at 866-UMASS-TIX, or by visiting the Mullins Center Box Office. In addition to single game tickets, all ticket options are currently available for the upcoming season including season tickets, group tickets and the new Flagship Flex Pack.
The 10-game voucher pack gives fans the flexibility to redeem vouchers for any home game, allowing purchasers to use 10 vouchers for one game, one voucher for 10 games, and every combination in between.
