October 20, 2019 | Women's Soccer
PITTSBURGH – Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Massachusetts women's soccer team (8-4-3, 5-2-1) used a dominating final 45 minutes to fight back and top Duquesne (5-7-2, 3-5-0) on the road on Sunday afternoon at Arthur J. Rooney Field, 2-1.
The victory extends the Minutewomen's unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1), and moves UMass to 5-1-1 in its last seven matches with two games remaining in the regular season.
Duquesne drew first blood in the match in the 12th minute when Alex Saturni sent a shot past UMass goalkeeper Peyton Ryan (four saves) into the top left corner to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead early, and was able to keep UMass at bay for the remainder of the half despite a 10-8 shot advantage by the Minutewomen (3-3 shots on goal) in the opening 45 minutes.
Massachusetts, though, regrouped at halftime and came out firing in the second half, outshooting the Dukes 19-6 (9-2 shots on goal). UMass found the equalizer in the 65th minute when Lauren Bonavita found the back of the net for the second straight game, taking a feed from Rebeca Frisk and burying a shot into the lower left corner for her eighth of the year.
The Minutewomen continued to dictate the pace of play throughout the half, and went ahead for good with 11:53 to go when Jenny Hipp tallied her first goal of the year off an assist from Ava Jouvenel, beating goalkeeper Megan Virgin (10 saves) up top to put the visitors up 2-1.
The Minutewomen will return home on Thursday for its final regular season game at Rudd Field when Massachusetts hosts La Salle at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
