Minutewomen jump in front early; van Tonder earns third shutout of season
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – University of Massachusetts field hockey picked up a crucial 3-0 win over Lock Haven on Friday at Charlotte E. Smith Field. The victory improves the Minutewomen to 6-7 on the season and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bald Eagles fall to 7-7 overall and 4-2 versus league foes.
In addition, it was the fifth straight win for Massachusetts on the road–the longest such streak since Oct. 2-Nov. 3, 2013.
Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder made three saves in her third shutout of the season and ninth of her career. LHU's Joaquina Orlandini had one save on the day.
Just 57 seconds into the contest freshman Jess Beech put the Minutewomen out in front. Sophomore Sophie Johnson fed the ball from the 25-yard line diagonally into the circle which was broken up in the middle by a Lock Haven defender. Beech played the carom and rocketed a reverse-stick shot into the right side of the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
Then, in the 19th minute the visitors doubled their lead by way of a penalty corner. Junior Lucy Cooper led the insert directly to freshman Vera Heering, who put a low ball through traffic and received a lucky tip home from a Bald Eagles player in front of the cage. The goal went as the first of Heering's career.
Cooper's assist on Heering's goal was the 26th of her career, moving the Wellington, New Zealand native into a three-way tie for eighth at UMass alongside former Minutewomen greats Judy Strong (1978-81) and Kate Putnam (1995-98).
With under four minutes left in regulation the Maroon and White iced the victory with a second corner goal. Freshman Emilie Keij inserted to Beech who was the stopper and left the ball for junior Georgie McTear. McTear took two steps and put a beautiful drag flick over Orlandini's right shoulder, earning her fourth goal of the year.
A lockdown effort by van Tonder and the UMass backline helped the squad keep an opponent off the scoreboard for the fourth time this season. Lock Haven earned six penalty corner opportunities on the day to three for UMass, but the Maroon and White led in shots on goal, 4-3.
Massachusetts now turns its focus to an equally important Atlantic 10 matchup on Sun., Oct. 20 as the squad visits Saint Francis. Starting whistle is scheduled for noon at DeGol Field in Loretto, Pennsylvania.
