Field Hockey Blanks Saint Francis, 2-0

October 20, 2019 | Field Hockey

Minutewomen have won six in a row on the road for the first time since 2008

LORETTO, Pa. – Led by first half goals from junior Lucy Cooper and freshman Steph Gottwals, plus a lockdown defensive effort all day, University of Massachusetts field hockey shutout Saint Francis, 2-0, on Sunday at DeGol Field. UMass has leveled its overall record at 7-7 with the win and improves to 4-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Red Flash fall to 4-11 and 1-4 in the A-10.

The result also was the third consecutive win for the Minutewomen and sixth on the road, the latter marking the first such feat since Sept. 5-Oct. 19, 2008.

In goal, junior Marlise van Tonder had four saves and earned her second consecutive clean sheet, her fourth of the season. Saint Francis goalkeeper Claudia Marzec recorded six stops in the setback.

In the eighth minute, UMass started the day's scoring when Crawford picked up a loose ball from classmate Jess Beech and found Cooper on the edge of the circle. Cooper entered from the left side and put a low shot past Marzec and into the right corner of the cage for her fifth goal of the season. The tally proved to be the game-winner.
UMass added some insurance in the 24th minute with the first goal of Gottwals' collegiate career. Junior Georgie McTear put a shot on goal that Marzec turned aside, but Gottwals was camped in perfect position on the doorstep to clean up the rebound.
McTear nearly stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute, ringing the post on a penalty corner opportunity. It was one of seven corners for Massachusetts on the day to just two for Saint Francis, while the Maroon and White also amassed a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Massachusetts now returns home and continues the second half of the A-10 schedule with a Fri., Oct. 25 game against La Salle, scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. It will mark UMass' annual Pink Game in support of the fight against cancer and fans are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink.
