Setting the Scene
A crucial two-game Atlantic 10 weekend sits next on the docket for University of Massachusetts field hockey as the Minutewomen head to Pennsylvania to face Lock Haven and Saint Francis. The squad opens up the trip on Fri., Oct. 18 with a 3 p.m. game at Lock Haven's Charlotte E. Smith Field, before continuing to Saint Francis on Sun., Oct. 20 to meet the Red Flash at DeGol Field. At 2-2 halfway through the conference schedule, UMass sits only one game out of the top-four in the tightly-packed Atlantic 10 standings.
Recap in a Minute
The Maroon and White are coming off of a trip to Davidson last Fri., Oct. 11 which ended with a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats. Junior forward Lucy Cooper had a season-high four points on a goal plus two assists and both junior Marlise van Tonder and redshirt sophomore Megan Davies played one half in goal to secure the result.
Davidson netted its lone goal via a fourth quarter penalty stroke–the first Wildcats tally against UMass in a span of more than 251 minutes of game time dating back to Oct. 14, 2016.
Commonwealth Connections
• UMass graduate student defender Michelle Barrett and Lock Haven freshman goalkeeper Mariana Birdthistle both hail from Limerick, Ireland.
• Natives of Downingtown, Pennsylvania include UMass redshirt sophomore midfielder/defender Jenna Garber and Saint Francis freshman goalkeeper Amber Bryan.
The All-Time Series
The Minutewomen hold a 10-1 all-time record against Lock Haven dating back to the Bald Eagles' entry to the Atlantic 10 in the 2010 season. UMass has emerged on top in the last three contests, with a 4-3 overtime triumph coming last season in Amherst.
Similarly, all six matchups with Saint Francis have come in this decade after the Red Flash joined the A-10 in 2013. UMass owns a 4-2 mark against their Loretto, Pennsylvania counterpart, which will depart the conference at season's end for a move to the Northeast Conference.
de Jonge in Elite Senior Company
Senior midfielder Sophie de Jonge was named to the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game on Wed., Oct. 16. The showcase, scheduled for Fri., Nov. 22, will take place at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium following the NCAA Division I National Semifinals. It marks the ninth time in the last 10 seasons that a Minutewoman has been tabbed to participate in the prestigious game.
De Jonge, an Amsterdam, Netherlands native, was one of just 38 student-athletes selected. In 71 career games with 52 starts, she owns 16 points on a pair of goals plus 12 assists. She was an Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection in 2018 and also was placed on the A-10 All-Championship Team (2017) and NFHCA National Academic Squad (2016).

Massachusetts tested itself right out of the gate with one of the most challenging non-conference schedules in New England, if not beyond. To date, four of the five Minutewomen losses outside the A-10 have come to foes ranked top-20 in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll (top 25). Three of the ranked losses were by just one goal.
Crown Collection
Since 1995, every postseason Atlantic 10 Championship has been won by either Massachusetts (13), Richmond (8) or Saint Joseph's (3). UMass took home the league crown and automatic NCAA Tournament bid each year from 1996-2001, back-to-back in 2007-08, 2010, 2012-13 and again in 2015-16.
Next Up
Massachusetts is back at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Fri., Oct. 25 for a 3 p.m. Atlantic 10 game against La Salle. It will mark the program's annual Pink Game to spread cancer awareness and fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink attire. UMass Athletics will also be issuing free pink pom poms to mark the occasion.
Roll UMass
Three University of Massachusetts alumnae are active NCAA Division I head coaches heading into the 2019 season, while numerous others hold assistant coaching roles around the country. Duke head coach Pam Bustin played at UMass from 1985-88, Stanford's Tara Danielson from 1990-93 and Niki Miller (2013-16) is leading Wagner ahead of the Seahawks' inaugural campaign.
Sweet 16
Massachusetts has secured a league-record 16 Atlantic 10 Championships, most recently winning the postseason conference title back-to-back in 2015-16. The program's 26 NCAA Tournament appearances also stand as the top mark in the A-10.
