The Minutemen fired off eight shots on the day while Yale scored the game-winner in the 98th-minute.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team battled No. 24-ranked Yale into overtime on Tuesday afternoon at Rudd Field, falling to the Bulldogs in the 98th-minute on a goal that took a deflection before finding the back of the net.
The Minutemen attempted eight shots on the afternoon, including three in the first half as Graham Brenner had an early opportunity for a header at the near post that sailed wide in the 7th-minute of play. Freshman Ryan Levay led the attack with two shot attempts with one on target while fellow freshman Evan Fournier also put one shot on goal.
Both squads had goals disallowed on the game due to offsides, first on a Yale attack in the 23rd-minute as the Bulldogs scored from in close before the goal was taken away for an offside call. The Minutemen looked to break the scoreless tie in the 50th-minute as Levay found Quinn Serafino off a free kick from near the midfield for a header that was put in before offsides was ruled.
Marvyn Dorchin finished with a game-high five saves in goal for the Minutemen, turning away three shots in the opening 45 minutes before eventually picking up another save in the overtime period on a shot from Paolo Carroll.
Yale's Miguel Yuste scored the game-winning goal with just under two minutes remaining on the clock in the first overtime period as he sent one towards goal that took a deflection and found the post and the right side of goal.
The Minutemen will head out on the road as they resume Atlantic 10 play at 7 p.m. against Duquesne before returning home to Rudd Field on Wednesday, Oct. 23 to host Rhode Island.
