St. Bonaventure Nips Minutewomen, 64-63
January 26, 2019 | Women's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball put up a valiant battle but fell just short as the Minutewomen were topped by St. Bonaventure, 64-63, at the Mullins Center on Saturday. The loss drops UMass to 11-9 on the season and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bona is now 5-14 and 2-4 in the league.
Junior Hailey Leidel had a game-high 17 points, moving into 11th all-time on the UMass career scoring list (1,202). Leidel added five rebounds and was one of three Minutewomen with four assists on the day. Freshman Destiney Philoxy had 12 points and classmate Asia McCoy came down with six rebounds.
St. Bonaventure claimed the lead for good after Mckenna Maycock put down a running layup with 40 seconds left in regulation. Massachusetts advanced the ball with a timeout but could not convert on the ensuing possession.
The Bonnies then had a chance to seal the victory, however an offensive foul brought new life to the Maroon and White. After coming up short on their next possession, the Minutewomen fouled with under five seconds on the clock, setting up free throws. Although UMass came up with the rebound after both attempts missed, the squad ran out of time and could not get a shot off before the final buzzer.
UMass trailed at halftime by a 33-29 score, but bounced back in the third quarter with a 13-0 run to build an eight-point lead at 51-43. In the final frame, the Minutewomen led by as many as six before the last several minutes went back-and-forth.
For St. Bona, both Dajah Logan and Maycock turned in 16 points and three different Bonnies had five rebounds apiece.
The Minutewomen now embark on a two-game road trip to Richmond, Virginia, beginning on Wed., Jan. 30 with a 6 p.m. game at VCU.
