Massachusetts battles with Atlantic 10’s leading team to final buzzer despite loss

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was neck-and-neck with VCU for the majority of the contest, but the Rams capitalized on late opportunities as the home squad held off UMass, 52-48, on Wednesday night at E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. With the setback, UMass drops to 11-10 on the season and 3-4 in Atlantic 10 play, while VCU is now 15-6 and remains atop the league standings at 7-1.

Junior Hailey Leidel led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and contributed eight rebounds, also a game-high. Freshman Destiney Philoxy logged 11 points and six assists, tying a career-high, while classmate Asia McCoy added six rebounds in the loss. Redshirt freshman Anil Soysal had eight points, six of which came in the fourth quarter, in addition to four boards.

Both teams were slow to start with neither side finding twine until nearly two minutes into action. From there the Minutewomen traded buckets with VCU before taking a 10-7 lead into the second quarter. Leidel pushed the advantage to 16-11 on the strength of a triple at the 7:47 mark, but VCU's Tera Reed answered with a 6-0 run herself to put the Rams back on top. The lead would change hands twice more before the teams headed into halftime with Massachusetts down just one point at 22-21.

VCU would go on a 9-2 run out of halftime and swell its lead to as much as nine late in the third period. In the final 10 minutes UMass shot 9-of-13 from the field and cut the deficit to four multiple times, sitting on the verge of completing the rally effort. Leidel was a perfect 3-of-3 shooting for eight points, as was Soysal, but after VCU's Danielle Hammond brought the advantage back to six in the last 60 seconds, UMass was forced to foul and would be unable to finish the comeback.

Hammond led the Rams with 15 points and was closely followed by Reed with 13 points, six dimes and four boards in Reed's return to the lineup. Turnovers plagued the Minutewomen down the stretch, with VCU converting 20 by UMass into 22 points.

Massachusetts returns to Richmond on Sun., Feb. 3 for a noon tilt with the University of Richmond.
