No. 1 Hockey Nipped By No. 8 Northeastern In Overtime, 2-1

January 19, 2019 | Hockey

Sophomore John Leonard netted his seventh goal of the year in the setback for the Minutemen.

BOSTON – No. 1 University of Massachusetts hockey rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the score in the third, but No. 8 Northeastern managed to nip the Minutemen in overtime as UMass fell 2-1 in the extra period on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 18-4-0, 10-2-0 in Hockey East play, while the Huskies improve to 15-5-1 and 9-3-1 in league action.

"I thought Northeastern came out and had a really good push until the first timeout; I thought we settled down after that," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we played extremely well the rest of the way. Unfortunate for us that their two best players got breakaways and finished. Our best player had a breakaway and had a chance to finish, but I thought Cayden Primeau was the difference tonight. He was outstanding in net for Northeastern. It took a really good shot to beat him by Johnny Leonard in the third. I thought after we scored that goal we'd find a way to win. I thought we played extremely well, we out shot them 2-to-1 and probably out-chanced them the same. I know everybody was interested to see how we would play this weekend and I thought we played extremely well both nights and deserved a better fate tonight."

Northeastern broke up the scoreless deadlock 11:04 into the second period when Jeremy Davies forced a turnover in the neutral zone and skated in alone on goaltender Matt Murray for the tally.

Midway through the third period, UMass managed to pull even with the Huskies. After receiving the puck from senior Jacob Pritchard, freshman Ty Farmer fed sophomore John Leonard in the slot with a pass from behind the net for his seventh of the season at the 8:02 mark.

Sophomore Cale Makar had a chance to secure the win for the Minutemen on a breakaway in the final moments of regulation, but was denied by Primeau. Minutes later in overtime, Northeastern managed the deciding tally with Tyler Madden finishing a pass from Jordan Harris and Brandon Hawkins on an odd-man rush at 1:12.

UMass ended the night with a 46-24 shot advantage and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Huskies were 0-for-2. Murray totaled 22 saves for the Minutemen and Primeau finished with 45 stops for Northeastern.

The Minutemen will next travel to Maine for a two-game set against the Black Bears beginning on Friday, Jan. 25, with game one of the weekend slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
