No. 2 Hockey Skates Past Maine, 4-2

January 25, 2019 | Hockey

Marc Del Gaizo and Cale Makar both had multi-point nights in the Minutemen’s 19th win over the season.

ORONO, Maine – An early goal from freshman Marc Del Gaizo helped propel No. 2 University of Massachusetts hockey to a 4-2 win at Maine on Friday night. The victory marks the Minutemen's 19th of the season (19-4-0) and moves the squad to 11-2-0 in Hockey East action, while the Black Bears fall to 8-12-3 and 4-6-3 in league contests.

"I thought the first 15 minutes tonight we were outplayed," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We came up here having talked all week about playing a simple game against a heavy team and Maine really dictated the play early. I thought the last five minutes of the first we were pretty good and the rest of the game we were pretty solid. That third goal by Mitchell Chaffee, that cushion was huge."

UMass was on the board 3:01 into the contest when Del Gaizo skated up the ice and fluttered the Minutemen's first shot of the game past Jeremy Swayman from just inside the Maine blue line. Sophomore Cale Makar and junior Niko Hildenbrand earned the assists on the play.

Capitalizing on an opportunity with a man advantage 6:11 into the second, senior Jacob Pritchard expanded the Minutemen's lead to two with his 11th tally of the season. Receiving the puck from freshman Ty Farmer and Del Gaizo at the points, Pritchard was at the post to tap the feed from Farmer home.

Before the close of the frame, though, Maine trimmed its deficit back to one. Amidst a scramble in front of UMass goaltender Filip Lindberg, Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup cleaned up a loose puck from Brendan Robbins and Tim Doherty at 14:54.

Sophomore Mitchell Chaffee netted what would prove to the game winner, his 14th tally of the season and 50th career point, 3:56 into the third to regain the two-goal cushion for the Minutemen, rifling home a pass from Mario Ferraro and Anthony Del Gaizo.

With the net empty and less than a minute to go in regulation, Emil Westerlund scored to bring the Black Bears within a goal of UMass once more. However, Makar responded with an empty net tally to cement the win for the Minutemen with his 50th career point.

UMass finished the contest with a 42-27 shot advantage and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Maine was 0-for-1.

Lindberg (4-2-0) had 25 saves for the Minutemen and Swayman totaled 38 stops for Maine.

Marc Del Gaizo's goal and assist gave him his fourth mutli-point game of the season and Makar logged a goal and an assist, as well, his eighth multi-point game of the year and third in the past four contests.

The Minutemen will wrap up their weekend series at Maine tomorrow night, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
