Minutewomen attract largest Field Trip Day crowd since 2008-09

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to George Mason by a score of 70-52 on Wednesday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Junior Vashnie Perry led the Minutewomen with a season-high 13 points and senior Jessica George put down 10 in the setback before a Field Trip Day crowd of 3,310.

Following the matchup, Massachusetts falls to 10-8 on the season and an even 2-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Patriots are now 9-8 and 1-3 against conference foes.

Perry, who shot 5-of-10 from the field, also contributed team-bests of three assists and four steals while also grabbing four rebounds. Classmate Hailey Leidel finished with nine points and seven boards.

Mason was 26-of-58 (44.8 percent) shooting in comparison to 21-of-60 (35 percent) for the Minutewomen.

After the lead changed hands multiple times early in the contest, the Patriots would reclaim the advantage with 6:41 left in the opening quarter and did not look back. An 8-0 run by Mason capped in the final three minutes would give the Patriots a 21-14 lead after the first stanza.

The onset of the second period saw Massachusetts put together a quick 5-0 spurt that brought the Minutewomen back within two, however the squad would not get any closer. Mason capitalized on a pair of difficult shooting stretches for UMass and ultimately headed into the locker room at halftime with a 40-30 lead.

Both teams were an identical 5-of-14 from the field in the third quarter, leaving the door open for a fourth period comeback, but the Patriots pulled away in the final 10 minutes and swelled their lead to as much as 20 in the waning moments of the contest.

Mason had four scorers eclipse double figures in Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (22), Camarie Gatling (15), Jacy Bolton (12) and Sarah Kaminski (12). Bolton had eight rebounds and Cardaño-Hillary added to her line with a game-high five dimes.

The Minutewomen continue Atlantic 10 play on Sun., Jan. 20 game at Davidson. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at John M. Belk Arena.
