Minutewomen snap Davidson’s six-game conference winning streak

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Vashnie Perry shot 7-of-11 to tie a career-high with 18 points and the Minutewomen had two other double-digit scorers as Massachusetts claimed a 70-58 win over Davidson on Sunday at John M. Belk Arena. The win, which ended Davidson's six-game winning streak in conference play, improves UMass to 11-8 (3-2 Atlantic 10) and the Wildcats drop to 10-8 (4-1 A-10).

Junior Hailey Leidel had a 15-point day to move into 12th on the UMass all-time scoring list (1,185). Senior Genesis Rivera came off the bench to round out the three Minutewomen in double-figures, contributing a season-best 12 points. Leidel added seven rebounds and freshman Jessica Nelson was just one board short of a career-best with six on the day.

A back-and-forth first half began to turn UMass' way with a 13-2 run in the second quarter. Senior Jessica George capped the stretch connecting from downtown and giving the Minutewomen their biggest lead of the half at eight. But the Wildcats would battle back and narrow the UMass lead at halftime to 27-26.

UMass would go on to shoot over 50 percent from the field in the second half and use that to fend off a late Davidson push. As the game approached its final minutes the Wildcats were forced to foul, putting the Maroon and White in position to seal the game at the free throw line. In total, eight of the squad's 15 points from the stripe came in the fourth quarter.

The Minutewomen bench was instrumental in the victory, outscoring Davidson 28-6. In addition UMass had the edge in the paint, 24-18.

Katie Turner had a team-best 15 points for the Wildcats and five assists, while Cassidy Gould (12) and Sarah Donovan (10) narrowly missed double-doubles with nine and eight boards, respectively.

Massachusetts now turns its attention to a Sat., Jan. 26 home contest vs. Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure. Opening tip in the game is slated for 2 p.m. at the Mullins Center as the Minutewomen celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
