Fulton, Merklin Score Goals As UMass Falls On Road At BU, 3-2

UMass held a 2-1 advantage before a pair of late BU goals in the final seven minutes.
BOSTON, Mass. – Jack Fulton and Brandon Merklin each found the back of the net as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell on the road at Boston University Friday evening, 3-2. The Minutemen (2-2-1 Overall) took a 2-1 lead on Merklin's first of the season in the second half before a pair of Terrier goals in a span of 34 seconds brought the game to a final.
UMass had multiple chances early in front of the net at Nickerson Field as the Minutemen put a shot in the back of the net in the 16th-minute that was negated by an offside before Davis Smith fired the first shot of the evening just wide right of the target in the 20th-minute.
Fulton capitalized on the first shot on goal from either side in the 41st-minute for his second goal of 2018, sending a shot into the back of the net after a quick touch and attempt off the finds from Dylan Cranmer and Yosuke Hanya down the right side.
The Minutemen turned up the offensive pressure after a BU equalizer from Matt McDonnell 11 minutes into the second half as Hanya earned a UMass corner after one-touch move past the Terrier defender for a shot that was deflected out for a corner.
The corner led to the second goal of the night for the Minutemen on Fulton's corner kick, finding the head of Davis Smith on the far post before his header connected with Merklin to give UMass a 2-1 advantage.
Trey Miller finished with three saves on the night, including a diving stop to his left on a header that had some pace by BU in the 78th-minute. Miller picked up another save on a BU attempt that led to their equalizing goal in the 84th-minute as McDonnell found the back of the net on the save rebound before the Terriers' Karl Petursson goal just 34 seconds later secured a BU win.
The Minutemen return home to Rudd Field this weekend for a Sunday afternoon matchup against Clemson at 1 p.m.
