Minutewomen return to Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Fri., Sept. 28
MERION STATION, Pa. – University of Massachusetts field hockey closed out a two-game Pennsylvania swing on Sunday with a 5-0 setback to No. 16 Saint Joseph's at Ellen Ryan Field. The Minutewomen fall to 4-6 with the loss and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while SJU is now 6-2 and 1-0 in the A-10.
In spite of the result, freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne came up with 11 saves, marking her fourth outing with 10-plus saves.
St. Joe's was first to the scoreboard in the 20th minute when Anna Willocks lifted a diving chip into the cage over von dem Borne. The Hawks would continue to pressure offensively and pot two more tallies before halftime from Tonya Botherway (25') and Emily Peters (35'). Peters' goal came with just 20 seconds left on the clock and culminated a 2-on-1 with Botherway, who earned an assist on the play.
Both the fourth and fifth markers of the day came as a result of penalty corners. Henry moved the score to 4-0 in the 43rd minute before Kathrin Bentz concluded the day's scoring in the 56th minute.
Saint Joseph's wrapped up the day with a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal in addition to 12 corners, including eight in the first half. UMass earned just one corner opportunity in the second stanza.
The Minutewomen now head back to the Pioneer Valley and prepare for a Fri., Sept. 28 match against Davidson. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex and fans unable to attend can watch the contest live on ESPN .
