Von dem Borne and Davies combine for UMass’ first shutout of 2018
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey had three different goal scorers and used the goalkeeping duo of freshman Johanna von dem Borne and redshirt freshman Megan Davies to preserve a 3-0 win over Davidson on Friday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. With the win, UMass is now 5-6 on the season and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Wildcats fall to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the A-10.
Von dem Borne played nearly 57 minutes before Davies relieved her for the balance of the match. Each recorded a save en route to the combined shutout, the first clean sheet for the Minutewomen in 2018.
UMass struck first in the 23rd minute courtesy of junior Antonet Louw. Junior Sophie de Jonge sent a beautiful pass from outside the 25-yard line to Louw at the top of the circle, before Louw turned toward the cage and moved right of Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski before burying her shot in the low right corner. It was her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Maroon and White doubled their lead after halftime in the 46th minute thanks to a trio of sophomores. Lucy Cooper inserted a penalty corner to Bailey McNamara for the stop, before Georgie McTear stepped to the ball and, after one touch, tucked a drive into the left side of the cage.
In a highlight-reel sequence, freshman Sophie Johnson wrapped up the day's scoring in the 55th minute. After dribbling along the baseline into the left side of the circle, Johnson had an initial shot deflected into the air by a Davidson stick before she reached up in front of Zeszotarski and batted home the first tally of her collegiate career.
UMass had the penalty corner advantage by an 8-1 margin and outshot the Wildcats, 14-2. Zeszotarski made 10 saves in the loss.
The Minutewomen are back at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sun., Sept. 30 for a 1 p.m. matchup with Providence. Numerous UMass alumnae are expected to be in attendance and will be recognized as the program celebrates Alumnae Weekend.
