September 20, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Minutewomen win fifth straight - longest win streak since 2011 campaign.
AMHERST, Mass. - A pair of goals from Lauren Bonavita and Jenny Hipp proved the difference maker as the UMass women's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 play with a 2-0 win over Duquesne at Rudd Field on Thursday afternoon. The win marked the fifth consecutive for the Minutewomen (6-2-0) which is the longest since the Maroon and White won six consecutive in 2011.
UMass will continue its league-opening weekend on Sunday with a road trip to Rhode Island. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
For the fifth-straight game, Bonavita recorded a point in a match with her goal to put UMass up 1-0 in the 29th minute. The freshman, who has goals in the last four straight games, put home a rebound on a Fatou Barry shot from the far flank landed just inside the six-yard box.
Hipp added an insurance goal in the 54th minute after putting home a cross from Rebeca Frisk from close range. The play started with a terrific long pass up the near sideline by Dani Sclafani near midfield. Frisk was able to track the ball just inside the 18-yard box before sending a centering pass to Hipp for the six-yard shot to beat Duquesne goalkeeper Kyra Murphy (five saves).
The Dukes increased the pressure in the late stages of the match, but UMass keeper Peyton Ryan was strong in goal making a pair of saves in the 83rd and 84th minutes. Ryan finished the match with a career-high six saves to earn her second solo shutout of the season. It was the fifth clean sheet of the season for the Minutewomen as a team.
Overall, UMass held an 18-to-9 advantage in shots, while the Dukes had a 6-to-3 edge in corner kicks.
