Second Straight Win As Women's Soccer Blanks Delaware, 3-0

September 02, 2018 | Women's Soccer

Minutewomen capitalize on offense, post second consecutive shutout victory.

NEWARK, Del. - For the second straight match, the UMass women's soccer offense capitalized, while the defense notched a shutout resulting in a 3-0 win for the Minutewomen at Delware on Sunday afternoon. The result improves UMass to 3-2 on the year with the Maroon and White having seven goals over the last two matches while allowing none in 180 minutes of play.

In Sunday's result, Jenna Thomas, Erin Doster and Lauren Bonavita all scored, while Peyton Ryan and Alyssa Chase combined for the shutout in goal.

"I think we're seeing some things coming together with how we create and finish our scoring opportunities," said head coach Jason Dowiak. "The first goal was a great reaction play by Jenna after just a really quality service by Signe. Then to follow that with good movement off the ball by Erin and the delivery by Sarah really showed the kind of soccer we've been working on."

Thomas opened the scoring in the 35th minute on a corner kick service by Signe Schioldan. The service just cleared Blue Hens keeper Kamryn Stabelin where Thomas was able to re-direct towards the far post. A Delware defender nearly cleared the ball off the line, but it carried into the back of the net.

The Minutewomen increased the one-goal halftime lead on Doster's goal in the 51st minute. Sarah Beaulieu chased a long-lead pass down the far flank before winning a challenge and then slotting a pass to Doster who was cutting inside the 18-yard box. Doster flicked the ball with her right foot to re-direct it towards the near post as Stabelin has positioned herself inside the far side.

In the 81st minute, Bonavita scored the second goal of her freshman season on a penalty kick. The score was initially set-up by Kelly Marra who had carried the ball inside the 18-yard box on the near side before being fouled on a tackle.

"I was proud of how Lauren handled that PK situation," said Dowiak. "Though it won't show up as a statistic, Kelly's tough play continues to set-up scoring chances throughout the season including here."

UMass held a 15-to-7 advantage in shots including a 9-to-3 edge in shots on target. The Minutewomen also earned a season-high seven corner kicks while allowing just three.

Ryan finished the day with three saves in 63 minutes of work, while Chase closed out the final 27 minutes. Stabelin made six saves while playing the full 90 minutes.

The Minutewomen will return home on Friday, Sept. 7 (1 PM) to host Chicago State at Rudd Field to start a three-match home stand. Admission is free to all.
