Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 At Central Connecticut State

Minutewomen rally late, but unable to find equalizer in final 20 minutes of play.
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - A goal in the 16th minute of play proved the difference maker as Central Connecticut State defeated the UMass women's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday night at the CCSU Soccer Field. The Minutewomen pressed to find the equalizer with a late rally which saw five shots over the final 20 minutes of play, but the Blue Devils defense held on for the clean sheet.
The loss drops the Minutewomen to 1-1-0 on the year with UMass returning to action on Friday, August 24 at Rudd Field when Siena visits. Kickoff is set for 4 PM and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription).
CCSU (1-0-0) notched the only goal of the match at the 15:53 mark on a strike by Danielle Pearse with the Blue Devils taking the 1-0 lead into halftime.
UMass registered the first shot of the second half before putting together a rally in the final 20 minutes of play that featured five shots. In the 77th minute, UMass keeper Peyton Ryan, made a save to preserve the one-goal deficit and the Minutewomen had two chances in the final 10 minutes but were unable to convert.
Ryan finished the day with a pair of saves, while her CCSU counterpart Ashley Cavanaugh made four saves to earn the shutout.
The Minutewomen finished the match with a 9-to-8 edge in shots, but the Blue Devils held an 8-to-2 advantage in corner kicks including a pair in the final five minutes of play.
