Women's Soccer Opens Season With 2-0 Win Over Maine

AMHERST, Mass. - The Jason Dowiak era kicked off in high style as the UMass women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Maine on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen received goals from freshman Lauren Bonavita and senior Paige Kozlowski, while keeper Peyton Ryan earned her first career clean sheet.
For Dowiak, the result marked his first career win as a Division I head coach in his first outing leading the Minutewomen.
UMass will return to action on Sunday at Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn. Kickoff is set for 6 PM and the match will be streamed on the NEC Network.
Thursday's match saw UMass open the scoring in the 37th minute of play when Jenny Hipp slipped a well-timed touch pass to set-up Bonavita's first career goal. The freshman caught up to the pass where she flicked a left-footed shot to the low side of the far post from just outside the six-yard box.
After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime, the Minutewomen tacked on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Kozlowski scored her second career goal. Kozlowski collected a deflected ball down the far side line before lifting a tough angled shot on frame that tucked inside the far post.
Overall in the match, UMass held a 17-to-6 advantage in shots while corner kicks were even at four each.
Ryan finished the day having to make just two saves, while her Black Bear counterpart Annalena Kriebisch made eight in the match.
