Holy Cross Downs Women's Soccer 2-1 In Final Exhibition Match

Minutewomen open regular-season on Thursday, Aug. 16 against Maine.
AMHERST, Mass. - A pair of early goals proved the difference maker as Holy Cross earned a 2-1 win over the UMass women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field in the final exhibition match of the preseason. The Minutewomen will open the 2018 regular season this Thursday, August 18 when Maine visits Rudd Field (4 PM). The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and admission is free to all.
In Sunday's action, both Crusader goals came on miscues in the UMass defensive third. In the fifth minute of play, Holy Cross opened the scoring after collecting a turnover off a goal kick and then tacked on a second nearly four minutes later after controlling a loose ball at the top of the UMass 18-yard box.
Sini Laaksonen notched her third goal of the preseason in the 15th minute after winning a loose ball and cracking a low, line-drive to the bottom of the far post.
UMass held a 17-to-8 advantage in shots on goal and tallied 26 shots overall. The Crusaders earned six corner kicks to five for the Minutewomen.
The Maroon and White had several excellent chances to equalize in the match including a five-shot outburt in the final three minutes of regulation. Crusader keeper Sophia Lettieri stood tall, however, making four of her 16 saves in that stretch.
Peyton Ryan made three saves in goal for UMass in 63 minutes of work, while Alyssa Chase made a pair of saves in the final 27 minutes of the match.
