Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight claim second place finishes

PHILADELPHIA – A pair of silver medals for the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight highlighted the final day of the Dad Vail Regatta for University of Massachusetts rowing on Saturday along the Schuylkill River. The Minutewomen entered the day with four boats in their respective Grand Finals as a result of Friday's action.

Drexel was the lone crew to top the Minutewomen (6:47.291) in the 2V8, while Boston University was roughly five seconds ahead of UMass (6:30.092) in the V8.

The morning began for the Minutewomen at 8:10 a.m. with the Novice Eight's third place finish in 7:15.477, only a tenth of a second behind second-place Pittsburgh and four short of Jefferson. Next on the water was the Varsity Four, which tabbed fifth (7:41.563) in its Petite Final.

Opening the afternoon was Caroline Garvey's competition in the Single, during which Garvey took sixth place with a time of 8:42.640.

UMass was fourth across the line in the Second Varsity Four (7:43.991), behind Bowdoin, Drexel and Florida Tech.

In the V8 Grand Final, UMass made up considerable ground on Boston University after the Terriers had jumped out to an early lead. The Maroon and White would make the turn under the Strawberry Mansion Bridge not far behind BU, but the latter would ultimately come away with gold. UMass also faced a strong battle from Fordham over roughly the last 100 meters before outlasting the Rams by almost two seconds.
