April 07, 2018 | Baseball
Fry, Hart and Lever all turn in multi-RBI performances
ST. LOUIS – Eddy Hart had drove in three runs and three Minutemen scored twice, but Saint Louis built a 7-2 lead after four innings and would not look back as the Billikens defeated UMass, 11-7, on Saturday at the Billiken Sports Center.
Hart, Ryan Lever and Alec Norton all had two hits and both Lever and Marcus Fry contributed two RBIs. With his 2-for-5 day, Lever extended his career-best reached base streak to 19 games, while Hart (2-for-4) hit safely for the eighth straight contest. Logan Greene, Hart and Norton each scored two runs.
After SLU put two across in the first inning, Massachusetts quickly evened the score at two in the second frame. Connor Smith doubled to right center field with one out and moved to third base on a wild pitch, after which Greene walked. Fry then laced a two-bagger of his own to bring Greene and Smith home.
The Billikens would post the game's next five runs, including four in the bottom of the fourth. Cole Dubet led off the frame with a solo homer, then James Morisano tripled, only to score on a sacrifice fly. Alex King wrapped up the inning with a two-run blast to right center field, moving SLU's lead to 7-2.
In the fifth the sides exchanged two runs apiece. Hart laced a double to plate Norton from first base, then Hart scored when Lever grounded out to shortstop.
After a two-run sixth for the Billikens, UMass got one back in the top of the seventh when Lever poked a 2-2 offering through the right side to bring Greene in from third. Hart later belted his second homer in as many days with a two-run shot in the ninth, bringing the game to its final score of 11-7.
SLU's Jackson Wark (6-0) went six innings for the win, recording seven strikeouts and surrendering four runs on five hits plus a walk. Kevin Hassett (0-4) took the loss for the Minutemen, working 3.1 innings and being charged with seven runs on seven hits and four walks. Connor Donahue pitched the game's final two innings for the Maroon and White and did not allow a hit in that span.
UMass falls to 9-11 with the loss and 2-6 against Atlantic 10 opponents, while the Bills improve to 20-9 overall and 7-1 in the league.
Massachusetts closes its three-game set with the Billikens on Sun., April 8 with first pitch at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
