Minutemen play next 10 games in Massachusetts
ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis jumped out to a 6-0 lead and Billikens starter Drew Reveno took a no-hitter into the fourth inning as the Billikens came away with a 6-2 victory over Massachusetts on Sunday at the Billiken Sports Center in the teams' series finale.
With the loss, UMass falls to 9-12 on the season and 2-7 in the Atlantic 10. In completing the weekend sweep, SLU is now 21-9 and 8-1 against A-10 foes.
Nolan Kessinger and Justen Voghel were 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Eddy Hart walked to extend his reached base streak to nine consecutive games and Logan Greene reached for the eighth straight contest.
The Billikens plated two runs in the first inning, both with two outs. Parker Sniatynski singled up the middle, then scored after a balk moved him to second. He ultimately scored when Jake Garella poked a base hit down the right field line. Garella came around from first when Carter Hanford placed a 1-1 offering in the same spot and ended up on second base.
After a three-run third, SLU pushed its advantage to 6-0 with men on the corners. Alex King grounded out to third base, allowing Ryan Hernandez to come in from third base.
UMass' lone two runs came in the seventh inning and involved Greene. With one out in the frame, he poked a single up the middle to score Alec Norton from second base and put the Minutemen on the board. After Dylan Robinson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, a wild pitch allowed Greene to cross the plate. SLU went on to retire UMass in order in both the eighth and ninth.
Reveno (6-1) was the winning pitcher, throwing six shutout innings and surrendering just two hits and a walk while recording four strikeouts. For UMass, Brooks Knapek (2-3) took the loss, lasting three-plus innings and on the hook for the Billikens' six runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out four batters before Casey Aubin, Carter Knapek and Sam Cooper logged five Ks over five combined shutout innings.
Ryan Lever's 19-game reached base streak came to an end with the loss, the longest such run by a Minuteman since the 2012 season.
The Minutemen play their next 10 games within the confines of Massachusetts, a stretch that begins Tues., April 10 against Boston College in the Consolation Game of the Baseball Beanpot. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at BC's Brighton Baseball Field. Fans should note that this game was previously scheduled to be played at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts.
