Eddy Hart belts first career home run in series-opening loss
ST. LOUIS – University of Massachusetts sophomore Eddy Hart hit his first home run as a Minuteman, but that proved to be UMass' only tally of the day as Saint Louis took the teams' series-opener, 6-1, on Friday at the Billiken Sports Center.
Five different Minutemen entered the hit column, including Ryan Lever who extended his career-best reached base streak to 18 games. Hart's homer pushed the sophomore's hitting streak to seven straight contests.
SLU got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alex King's bunt single combined with a throwing error scored Aaron Case, then a Carter Hanford double to right field brought King around and doubled the Billikens' lead to 2-0. Nick Reeser then laced a base hit to right field, scoring Hanford.
Hart initiated a 4-6-3 double play in the second inning, but as a result James Morisano crossed the plate, pushing the advantage to 4-0 in favor of the home squad.
After Hart put the Minutemen into the run column with one swing of the bat, the score remained 4-1 into the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Fletcher dropped a single into right field to plate Cole Dubet, then Morisano came across with the game's final run came after Case put down a bunt and a throwing error prolonged the sequence.
Miller Hogan (5-2) tossed seven-plus innings of one-run ball for the win, striking out 11 Minutemen and surrendering just three hits. Neither Hogan nor Sean Frontzak, who finished the game for the Billikens in a non-save situation, surrendered a single walk all day.
The loss went to Justin Lasko (2-2) after his six-plus inning outing, during which he scattered seven hits and SLU's six runs on the day. He recorded four strikeouts and walked four. Ben Shields took over with no outs in the seventh inning, escaping that frame without any further damage and posting a 1-2-3 eighth.
Friday's setback drops the Minutemen to 9-10 on the season and 2-5 in the Atlantic 10. SLU is now 19-9 overall including a 6-1 mark against league foes. The teams meet again on Sat., April 7 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time at the Billiken Sports Center.
