Mason Claims Series Finale Over Minutemen, 11-2

April 29, 2018 | Baseball

Massachusetts visits Hartford on Tues., May 1 in a 7 p.m. contest from Dunkin’ Donuts Park

FAIRFAX, Va. – A seven-run second inning set the stage for George Mason to take the series rubber game from the UMass baseball team as the Patriots defeated the Minutemen, 11-2, on Sunday at Spuhler Field.

Alec Norton had three of Massachusetts' 12 hits. Eddy Hart extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double in the first inning.

In the second frame, Frank Sturek worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Patriots on the board, then leadoff hitter Tyler Nelin cleared the bases with a double to left field. Brady Acker followed up with a double of his own to plate Nelin and Trevor Kelly wrapped up the inning with a third double that drove in two runs. The entirety of Mason's scoring in that frame came with two outs.

UMass got on the board in the top of the fourth when a Norton groundout brought in Logan Greene. Greene began the inning with a base hit, moving to third when Marcus Fry doubled down the left field line.

In the top of the fifth, the Minutemen plated an additional run via Hart's sacrifice fly to right field. Nolan Kessinger was hit by a pitch with one out, went to third on Ryan Lever's sixth double of the season, then came 90 feet home on the sac fly. Mason, however, would push the lead back to 8-2 in the last of the sixth on Logan Driscoll's RBI single through the right side.

Kelly clubbed a three-run homer in the eighth to cap the day's scoring.

The win on the mound went to Mason's Jared DiCesare (3-5), while Brooks Knapek took the loss (2-5) for the Maroon and White. In 5.1 innings out of the bullpen, Ben Shields logged six strikeouts and was responsible for just one run. He did not walk a single batter.

UMass falls to 12-21 (5-13 Atlantic 10) with the loss and Mason moves up to 18-23 (9-6 Atlantic 10).

The Minutemen wrap up their four-game road trip on Tues., May 1 with a 7 p.m. road game against Hartford from Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford, Connecticut.
