Fry’s Career Night Carries Baseball Over Hartford, 11-4

May 01, 2018 | Baseball

Sophomore clubs first career grand slam in Tuesday night victory

HARTFORD, Conn. – In part helped by a fourth-inning grand slam and a career-high six RBIs from sophomore Marcus Fry, University of Massachusetts baseball exploded for 11 runs and 10 hits as the Minutemen collected an 11-4 win over Hartford on Tuesday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park.

Eddy Hart pushed his hitting streak to a team-high nine consecutive games, tying a career-high.

UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Alec Norton began the frame by reaching on a catcher's interference call, advancing to third on a double down the left field line by Fry. A nicely executed safety squeeze from Cooper Mrowka allowed Norton to cross the plate before a Brett Evangelista sacrifice fly plated Fry.

With the bases loaded and one out in the third, Fry followed up in his next at bat with a rocket of a single into left field. Both Hart and Logan Greene scored, doubling the UMass lead to 4-0.

Hartford broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth when a pair of walks set up Ashton Bardzell to send a three-run homer over the left field wall, cutting the UMass lead to 8-3. In the last of the seventh the Hawks threatened and put runners at the corners via a pair of singles, but Connor Donahue used a key strikeout to work out of the jam unharmed.

In the ninth Nolan Kessinger joined the hit parade with a two-run single. Drew Metzdorf followed Kessinger with an RBI base knock, moving the score to 11-3 before Hartford posted one run in their final at bat.

Kevin Hassett (1-6) picked up the win with five innings of three-run ball, allowing four hits and striking out four. Donahue relieved Hassett and dealt three shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts before Casey Aubin wrapped up the night's final frame on the bump.

The loss went to Hartford's James Judenis (0-2).

With the Tuesday night triumph, Massachusetts is now 13-21 on the season. Hartford, which currently sits atop America East, falls to 16-26 with the non-conference setback.

The Minutemen continue a three-game stretch against America East foes on Wed., May 2, welcoming Maine to Earl Lorden Field in a 3 p.m. game.
