Minutewomen move into Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinal Round with shutout of Wildcats
ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 6 seed University of Massachusetts tennis program advanced into the semifinal round of the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 4-0 upset of No. 3 seed Davidson at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, on Fri., April 27. The Minutewomen earned their second consecutive shutout with the doubles point and wins by Ana Yrazusta (No. 2), Janja Kovacevic (No. 3) and Martina Bocchi (No. 6).
Massachusetts improved to 12-6 overall with the victory, which avenged a regular season loss to the Wildcats. Davidson fell to 16-5 due to the loss.
Doubles victories at No. 1 and No. 3 put the Minutewomen ahead, 1-0 entering singles matches. Yrazusta worked alongside Anna Napadiy for a 6-2 triumph over Sam Armas and Alyssa Hahn at No. 3 doubles before Laura Moreno and Ruth Crawford finished a 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot.
Bocchi worked by Ava Todd and doubles Massachusetts' team lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Shortly thereafter, Yrazusta won in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 outcome over Megan Scholvinck. It improved Yrazusta to 4-0 on the tournament over the opening two matches.
Kovacevic finished the shutout with her 6-3, 6-1 margin over Alexa Abele. At the time of Kovacevic's match-clinching win, the Maroon and White led by a set at No. 4 (Moreno) and No. 5 (Napadiy) as well.
The Maroon and White earned the right to face No. 2 seed George Washington in the semifinal round on Sat., April 28. Doubles will commence at 1 p.m.
