Minutewomen secure their return to the A-10 Championship Match

ORLANDO, Fla. - No. 6-seeded University of Massachusetts tennis won the doubles point for the third consecutive match and claimed victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles for a 4-2 victory over No. 2-seeded George Washington in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinal Round at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday.

The Maroon and White will face No. 1 seed VCU (16-5 overall) for the Atlantic 10 Championship on Sun., April 29 at 1 p.m. It is a rematch of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship Match, which the Minutewomen claimed over the Rams, 4-2, for a berth into the NCAA Championship.

The Minutewomen improved to 13-6 with the win against George Washington. The Colonials slipped to 14-9 with the loss.

Massachusetts took the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Ana Yrazusta and Anna Napadiy put the Minutewomen on-track to take doubles with their 6-0 shutout of Sara Grubac and Julia Herlogsson.

However, the Colonials rallied back with a victory at No. 2 and even it up with one match still playing. Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi decided doubles moments later as the duo downed GW's Marie-Louie Decamps and Diana Kussainova, 6-2.

George Washington promptly evened the match at 1-all with the first singles win of the afternoon at No. 6, only to see it dissipate when Napadiy took down Herlogsson at No. 5 by a 6-2, 6-0 margin.

The Colonials again answered the Minutewomen point-for-point as Decamps ousted Laura Moreno at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-3 win, and the remaining three matches went into their respective third sets.

With Crawford fending off George Washington's top singles player, Maria Siopacha, in the No. 1 spot, Yrazusta and Kovacevic secured Massachusetts its return to the A-10 title match as the duo triumphed at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Yrazusta bested Melis Bayraktaroglu in the first set, 6-2, but faltered in set two, 3-6 as Bayraktaroglu rallied back. The senior from Las Palmas, Spain, capped the match with a decisive 6-1 victory in the final set.

In need of one more win for a shot at the title, Kovacevic rallied back after she dropped the first set to Grubac and pushed past the fellow Belgrade, Serbia, native for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph.
