Minutewomen take on No. 11 seed Saint Joseph's in opening round
AMHERST, Mass. -Â The No. 6-seeded University of Massachusetts tennis program begins its Atlantic 10 Tournament slate with a Wed., April 25 match against No. 11 seed Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. A victory over the Hawks would send Massachusetts into the quarterfinal round against the winner of No. 3 Davidson/No. 14 St. Bonaventure for a Fri., April 27 match at 3 p.m.

The following is a complete list of seedings for the championship: No. 1 VCU, No. 2 George Washington, No. 3 Davidson, No. 4 Duquesne, No. 5 Richmond, No. 6 Massachusetts, No. 7 Dayton, No. 8 Fordham, No. 9 Saint Louis, No. 10 George Mason, No. 11 Saint Joseph's, No. 12 Rhode Island, No. 13 La Salle and No. 14 St. Bonaventure.

The UMass tennis team downed conference rival, Saint Joseph's, 6-1 at the Bay Road Tennis Center on April 4, 2014.Â
The Minutewomen took an early lead in doubles play when Aarzoo Malik and Arielle Griffin inked a 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Saint Joseph's Kristina Eisenbrand and Lauren Roy. Yuliana Motyl and Anna Woosley sealed the doubles point with a win in the No. 3 spot over Devi Jadeja and Anne Marie Devlin. Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper rounded out the doubles action in the No. 1 spot and tabbed a 4-5 unfinished contest.
UMass continued the winning into singles play, taking five-of six matches all in straight sets. Bokhari headed the charge in the No. 1 spot and took home a 6-2, 7-6 win over Aurora Davis. Motyl followed closely behind with a 7-6, 6-2, victory in No. 2 singles play. Malik, Griffin and Jessica Podlofsky clinched the match with wins in the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots, respectively.
Massachusetts Cruises To Second Atlantic 10 Win, 6-1, At Fordham
The Minutewomen put in a complete team effort at Fordham and downed the Rams, 6-1 for the second Atlantic 10 victory of the spring. The Minutewomen won the doubles point with a sweep and took five of six singles matches.
The Minutwomen won the doubles point with identical 6-3 decisions. Ruth Crawford and Ashley Avery stepped to the No. 1 court and claimed victory over Estelle Wong and Whitney Weisberg. Simultaneously, Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi bested Maia Balce and Gianna Insogna as the Maroon and White took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Massachusetts also won at five of the six singles spots, led by Crawford's 6-2, 6-2 outcome over Tatiana Grigoryan at No. 1 and Ana Yrazusta's 6-0, 6-4 downing of Wong at No. 2.
Minutewomen Earn Historic Win At Yale
University of Massachusetts tennis won for the fifth time in its last seven matches when the Minutewomen downed Ivy League foe Yale, 4-3 in New Haven, Connecticut, on Sat., March 24. The Maroon and White rallied from a deficit that nearly handed the doubles point to the Bulldogs and carried energy into singles action for wins by Ana Yrazusta (No. 2), Janja Kovacevic (No. 3) and Martina Bocchi (No. 6). It marked the first ever win for Massachusetts tennis over an Ivy League foe.
After the Bulldogs won at No. 2 and Massachusetts responded with a 6-3 victory by Yrazusta and Laura Moreno at the No. 1, the double point came down to Ruth Crawford and Ashley Avery against Lauren Gillinov and Sunday Swett at No. 3 spot. Gillinov and Swett looked assured of the victory ahead 5-4 (40-0); however, Crawford and Avery saved four consecutive match points and rallied back for the 7-5 victory, and the doubles point.
Bocchi doubled the lead and made quick work of Caroline Amos via a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 6 singles, though Yale answered at No. 5 shortly thereafter with Elizabeth Zordani's 6-0, 6-3 win over Anna Napadiy. Yrazusta extended the Massachusetts lead with her triumph at No. 2 singles, earned versus Amy Yang by a 6-2, 6-1 margin. The Bulldogs continued their comeback battle as Samantha Martinelli downed Crawford in the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-1.
With Kovacevic and Moreno still in action at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, Kovacevic sealed the team victory with her 6-4, 6-2 conquest over Valerie Shklover.
Success At Charlotte And Elon Spur Minutewomen Down South
UMass won two of its three matches during its North Carolina road trip as the Maroon and White bested Charlotte, 4-3 and Elon, 4-1. It marked the sixth and seventh victories on the year for the Minutewomen.
The Minutewomen won four times in singles play for the team victory, capped by Ruth Crawford's improbable comeback triumph at No. 1 singles. Crawford willed herself, and the team, to victory despite dropping the first set. She later trailed in the deciding third set 6-5 (40-0) before the junior from Atlanta, Georgia, reeled off the comeback despite being down four points for the 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) triumph and the corresponding on-court team celebration.
University of Massachusetts tennis competed for the second time in as many days on its North Carolina road trip and took a 4-1 match from Elon University. Wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles sealed the first point of the afternoon for the Minutewomen as the team's top two pairing took care of Elon. Ana Yrazusta and Laura Moreno battled by Alex Koniaev and Maria Paraja 6-4 while Ruth Crawford and Ashley Avery bested Olivia Lucas and Montana Moore 6-3.
Massachusetts Weekend Sweeps Black Knights, Bonnies
UMass tennis compiled a pair of 4-0 shutouts of Army West Point and St. Bonaventure in its last time on the court, a two-match series in West Point, New York, on Sat., Feb. 17 and Sun., Feb. 18.
The Minutewomen won over Army West Point at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Janja Kovacevic combined with Martina Bocchi for a 6-1 win before Ashley Avery and Ruth Crawford achieved the same feat of success. Ana Yrazusta, Kovacevic and Laura Moreno took home singles victories for the 4-0 outcome.
Short-handed St. Bonaventure was unable to keep pace with the Minutewomen, who picked up a pair of wins on forfeit, including one at No. 3 doubles for Jovana Bogicevic and Anna Napadiy and No. 6 singles by Avery. Yrazusta and Kovacevic added singles victories at No. 2 and No. 3, resepctively, for the team triumph.
