Norton’s Single Gives Baseball 3-2 Walk-Off Win Over La Salle

April 20, 2018 | Baseball

Lasko goes the distance on the mound as Minutemen collect third walk-off triumph of season

AMHERST, Mass. Alec Norton slapped a one out single down the left field line that scored Eddy Hart and gave University of Massachusetts baseball a 3-2 walk-off win over La Salle on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. It is the third such victory for the Minutemen this season and in all three, UMass has rallied to eliminate an earlier deficit.

Justin Lasko (3-2) turned in his second career complete game, striking out five and walking just two Explorers while on the hook for five hits. His lone blip on the radar was in the third inning, when La Salle struck for two runs.

Logan Greene went 2-for-4 on the day to post his third multi-hit effort this season, helping the Maroon and White to seven hits on the day. Norton's heroics in the ninth also extended his reached base streak to 11 consecutive games.

In the top of the third, the Explorers got on the board first when Brian Dudeck dropped a single into left field that scored leadoff hitter Austin Constantini. Constantini had walked to begin the inning, then advanced to second base on a Tommy Toal sacrifice bunt. Ben Faso, who had walked earlier, proceeded to cross the plate when Ryan Guckin grounded out to shortstop.

UMass would get one back in the bottom half. Keith Linnane earned a free pass, moved to second when Nolan Kessinger was hit by a pitch, and narrowed the deficit to 2-1 on Greene's left field RBI single. That capped a stretch that took place entirely with two outs.

Justen Voghel would sky a sac fly to left field in the following frame that brought in Hart with the tying run. Hart laced a leadoff single to right field, made it into scoring position on Connor Smith's base hit and was put on third via Norton's nicely-placed sac bunt.

That 2-2 score would hold until Norton came through in the ninth. Hart walked on four pitches, leading off an inning for the third time in the game. Smith was retired 2-3 on a sac bunt and after La Salle made a call to the bullpen for Sebastian Martinez, Norton jumped on a 2-0 pitch to drive Hart home and vault the Minutemen out of the dugout in celebration.

Explorers starter Jackson Ray (1-2) took the loss, working 8.1 innings and responsible for all three UMass runs. He scattered six hits, walked a pair and fanned two on the day.

Friday's result improves UMass' record to 11-17 (4-9 Atlantic 10), while La Salle falls to 11-25 (2-8 Atlantic 10). The teams will play the middle game of their three-game series on Sat., April 21 with first pitch at noon from Earl Lorden Field.
