Siena Holds Off UMass Baseball, 5-1

April 18, 2018 | Baseball

Fry knocked in the lone run of the game for the Minutemen with an eighth inning pinch hit single

AMHERST, Mass. – Siena opened the afternoon's scoring with two runs in the third inning and built a lead that would not be surmounted as the Saints topped the UMass baseball team, 5-1, on Wednesday at Earl Lorden Field. The lone run for the Minutemen came in the last of the eighth, when Marcus Fry stepped to the plate in a pinch hit situation and singled to score Alec Norton.

Nolan Kessinger went 2-for-4 with a double and two other Minutemen in Ryan Lever and Norton contributed two-baggers. Norton's day saw the junior reach base safely for the 10th consecutive game.

With one out in the third and following a fielding error, Joe Drpich placed a double down the right field line to plate the first run of the day for Siena as Marcos Campos came in from second base. Brian Kelly then skied a high fly ball to right field that was caught in foul territory but allowed Phil Madonna to tag and cross from third, moving the score to 2-0.

That remained the margin until the eighth. A wild pitch allowed Campos to score, then in the aftermath of two errors Madonna gave the Saints their fourth run of the day on a Jonathan Crimmin grounder.

Fry's RBI base hit was set up when Norton led off the bottom half of the eighth and smacked the first pitch he saw down the left field line for a double. Siena, however, would get that run back in the top of the ninth after Drpich doubled to deep right center in a play that scored Madonna from first base.

Twice the Minutemen stranded runners at third base, contributing to a total of 11 men left on for the game.

Tim Zehnbauer (1-0) collected the win in the midst of five different Siena arms that saw action. UMass' Sam Cooper (0-2) went five innings in his start and allowed just one earned run, but ultimately took the loss.

La Salle opens a three-game Atlantic 10 series with the Minutemen on Fri., April 20 at 3 p.m. from Earl Lorden Field.
