Harney deals 5.2 innings of no-hit ball in game one start
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball was defeated by Rhode Island by margins of 3-1 and 6-3 in the teams' doubleheader on Saturday at Earl Lorden Field. With only a single game originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, the twin bill was played as a result of inclement weather expected on Sunday. The Minutemen fall to 10-16 (3-9 Atlantic 10) following Saturday's results, while URI improves to 10-25 (3-9 Atlantic 10).
UMass continues its nine-game homestand on Tues., April 17 when UConn visits Earl Lorden Field at 3 p.m.

Game 1
Rhode Island 3, Massachusetts 1
Sean Harney did not allow a hit in his 5.2 inning start and struck out five, but after exiting the Rams claimed a 2-1 lead and added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Drew Metzdorf went 2-for-4 out of the DH spot and Ryan Lever also contributed a 2-for-4 clip.
Â
Metzdorf recorded his first collegiate RBI in the second inning on a base hit to left field that scored Connor Smith. Smith, who reached as a result of a fielding error, moved up to second base on an infield single and advanced to third on a ground out.
Â
Rhody's Xavier Vargas sent a two-run double into the right field corner with two outs in the sixth to score Jackson Coutts and Austin White. In the eighth URI added one more when Max Mircovich crossed on a fielder's choice.
Â
The win on the hill went to Taso Stathopoulos (2-1), while Kevin Hassett (0-5) took the loss. Nick Johnson earned his second save of the season.
Â
Game 2
Rhode Island 6, Massachusetts 3
Cooper Mrowka drove in two runs, but the Rams pushed four across in the middle innings to secure the doubleheader sweep. Both Mrowka and Logan Greene collected two hits including a double apiece.
Â
After URI took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Greene came across with the equalizer on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first. The score remained tied at one-all until the last of the fourth when Mrowka aired a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Alec Norton from third base.
Â
The Rams proceeded to post two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead before Mrowka's RBI double in the sixth brought Greene all the way around from first. The rally would move no further, however, as URI moved its lead back to three in the top of the eighth.
Â
Rhode Island starter Tyler Wilson (1-6) earned the victory, while Brooks Knapek (2-4) received the loss. Cam LaFleur relieved Wilson to start the seventh inning and picked up the save, not allowing a hit for the balance of the contest.
