Baseball Dropped By UMass Lowell, 4-1

April 11, 2018 | Baseball

Minutemen continue nine-game homestand on Friday against Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island

AMHERST, Mass. – Two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings put UMass Lowell ahead for good as the River Hawks came away with a 4-1 victory over Massachusetts in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass is now 9-14 on the season, while the River Hawks improve to 12-17 with the win.

Ryan Lever went 2-for-3 on the day, plating the lone run for the Minutemen when Justen Voghel worked a bases-loaded, four-pitch walk in the sixth inning. Eddy Hart went 1-for-3 with a walk to reach base safely for the 11th straight game.

In the fourth inning the River Hawks nearly opened the game's scoring. With a runner on first and Sam Cooper ahead in the count 0-2, Steve Passatempo skied a high fly ball to deep left center field. Nolan Kessinger hustled back to the warning track and as he crashed into the outfield wall, reached up for a highlight-reel catch that robbed Passatempo of a home run.

The following frame saw UMass Lowell get on the board with a two-spot. Colby Maiola tripled to left center to bring in Ben Prada from first base, then on the next pitch Mark Tumosa knocked in Maiola with a base hit to left field. The River Hawks would go on to match that figure in the top of the sixth in a sequence that began when Joey Castellanos poked a single through the left side, crossing Passatempo. Later in the inning with runners at the corners, a wild pitch allowed Vinnie Martin to dart home from third base and push the UMass Lowell lead to 4-0.

Lever's tally was set up in part by two earlier free passes to himself as well as Hart, as well as a steal of second base by Lever. Connor Smith then sent a ground ball to the left side of the infield and as the River Hawks attempted to begin a double play, Hart slid in safely to second, loading the bases. Voghel then worked a two-out walk before a strikeout ended the threat with the bases still loaded.

The win on the mound went to Tim Fallon (1-0), who went 1.1 innings to relieve starter John Polichetti after the fourth. Fallon was charged with the lone run on the day for the Minutemen on one hit and two walks. David Hoar III claimed his first save of the season in closing out the game's final two innings, fanning two and allowing only a base hit in that span.

Cooper (0-1) made his first start as a Minuteman, but took the loss after throwing 4.2 innings of two-run ball. He logged three strikeouts and did not walk a single batter, scattering five hits throughout the outing.

Spencer Bergeron took the hill for the top of the ninth inning, making his collegiate debut and posting two strikeouts in the frame.

Atlantic 10 play resumes for the Minutemen on Fri., April 13 as the squad opens a three-game series with Rhode Island. First pitch from Earl Lorden Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
