Lasko fans five over six shutout innings to help Massachusetts to its fifth consecutive win
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Justin Lasko tossed six shutout innings and allowed just two hits after the first frame as University of Massachusetts baseball took the first contest of a two-game series against Bradley, 6-2, on Friday night at Chain of Lakes Park. The win, UMass' fifth in a row, improves the Minutemen to 6-3 on the season while the Braves are now 10-5.
Lasko (1-0), pitching on his birthday, struck out five and retired nine straight after Bradley's Luke Shadid and Luke Mangieri singled to open the game. The Braves were subsequently kept off the bases until the fourth when Andrew Ivelia smacked a leadoff double and Keaton Rice hit a double of his own in the fifth.
Each Minuteman in the starting lineup had at least one hit on the night, while four posted doubles in Marcus Fry, Ryan Lever, Connor Smith and Justen Voghel. Hart, Lever and Voghel all went 2-for-4, Smith went 2-for-3 and both Lever and Voghel drove in two runs.
Several streaks were also extended by various Minutemen in the win. Hart and Lever have hit safely in UMass' last eight games while Hart has reached base in all nine contests this season. Trailing Hart in the latter category are Lever (8) and Cooper Mrowka (8).
After Hart singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning Lever smacked an 0-1 pitch to right field for a double that would see Hart come all the way around to put UMass on the board. Three batters later and in a near carbon copy of the previous result, Voghel laced an 0-1 double, this time to left field and scoring Lever to double the UMass lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the third the Minutemen capitalized on two miscues in the field and as a result, moved the score to 3-0. Mrowka placed a one-out single in left center field and reached second base as a result of a fielding error. Voghel then stepped up and after an errant pickoff attempt moved Mrowka to third, Voghel singled to bring home the run.
Two more came in for the Maroon and White in the following inning. A second errant pickoff attempt with runners at the corners allowed Frank DiOrio to score, then a sacrifice fly to right field by Lever tacked on UMass' fifth run in Keith Linnane. The Minutemen then wrapped up their scoring for the night in the fifth inning when Marcus Fry's right center field double drove in Smith.
The Braves got two back just before seventh inning stretch when Ivelia hit a two-run double to left center field, moving the score to 6-2 for the rest of the night.
Cole Cook (2-3) received the loss, being pulled after the third inning and responsible for three runs on six hits and two walks. He recorded four strikeouts.
Massachusetts concludes its time in Florida on Sat., March 17 with a rematch against Bradley. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Park.
