Massachusetts’ five-game winning streak comes to an end
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Bradley University opened with six unanswered runs over the first four innings and would not look back as the Braves topped the UMass baseball team, 6-3, on Saturday at Chain of Lakes Park. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Minutemen and wraps up the team's spring break trip, during which the club went 5-1.
Eddy Hart and Ryan Lever extended their hitting streaks to nine games apiece, while both reached base safely for 10th and ninth consecutive game, respectively. Lever went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and Frank DiOrio contributed a 2-for-3 effort, scored once and drove in a run out of the nine-hole. Hart also smacked a double in the fifth inning.
The Braves put men in scoring position in the first inning and immediately capitalized. Andrew Ivelia doubled to left field to put Luke Mangieri at third base, then Derek Bangert's two-RBI single put Bradley ahead 2-0. In the bottom of the second the squad added three more after sending eight men to the plate.
After the score moved to 6-0 in the fourth, UMass finally got on the board in the top of the fifth frame. DiOrio came in from third on a ground ball hit to shortstop by Lever, then Nolan Kessinger placed a sacrifice fly in center field to bring Hart home and the plate second run of the game for the Minutemen.
The game's final run came with one away in the ninth when DiOrio sent a hard-hit ball back to pitcher Boby Johnson that allowed Marcus Fry to cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately for Massachusetts, a double play ensued, ending the threat as well as the game.
Bradley starter Sam Lund (3-0) earned the victory on the hill after giving up two runs on four hits and two walks. He logged four strikeouts during his five innings of two-run ball.
Brooks Knapek (1-2) was hooked with the loss for the Minutemen, lasting three-plus innings during which he was charged with six runs on nine hits and a pair walks. Kevin Hassett relieved Knapek early in the fourth inning and pitched the balance of the afternoon, scattering three hits while striking out seven, walking none and holding the Braves scoreless.
The Minutemen now return to the Bay State and return to action on Tues., March 20 in a game scheduled for 3 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.
